Air handler blower not running/not turning on

The furnace or air handler blower motor is the component that circulates the air throughout the home. If power is getting to the blower motor, but the motor does not run, the motor may be burned out. If the blower motor is burned out, replace it. If the blower motor hums, check the blower fan to ensure that it spins freely. If the blower fan is unobstructed but does not spin freely, replace the blower motor.

Air handler is noisy or loud

Over time, the bearings in the blower motor wear out, causing the motor to become noisy. Some furnace or air handler blower motors can be lubricated, so if applicable, try lubricating the motor first. If lubricating the motor doesn’t solve the problem, or if the blower motor can’t be lubricated, replace the motor.

Air handler is not blowing enough

Since the furnace or air handler blower motor is the component that circulates the heated air throughout the home, a defective blower motor will result in the furnace or air handler not blowing enough. You can use a multimeter to test the blower motor for electrical continuity, a continuous electrical path present in the motor, as well as determine if power is reaching the motor. You can also try turning the blower wheel by hand. If the wheel does not turn freely, it's likely the motor bearings have seized and the blower motor will need to be replaced.

Air handler not heating

The blower motor spins a blower wheel to circulate the heated air throughout the home's venting. If the motor is burned out, the air will not be circulated. You should try turning the blower wheel by hand to determine if it can rotate freely. If blower wheel does not turn freely, it's likely the blower motor bearings have seized and the motor will need to be replaced. You can also use a multimeter to determine if voltage is reaching the motor. If power is getting to the component, but the motor doesn't run, it is likely defective.

Air handler coil icing up

Since the furnace or air handler blower motor is the component that circulates the air through the unit to cool it, a defective blower motor could result in the evaporator coil icing up.

Heat pump not cooling

Since the blower motor is the component that circulates the cooled air through the home's venting, a defective blower motor will result in the unit not cooling.

Heat pump coils frosting up

Since the blower motor is the component that circulates air through the home's venting, a defective blower motor could result in the indoor unit's coils frosting up.

Air handler has a burning smell

The blower motor spins a blower wheel to circulate the heated air throughout the home's venting. If the motor is burned out, the air will not be circulated. You should try turning the blower wheel by hand to determine if it can rotate freely. If the blower wheel does not turn freely, it's likely the blower motor bearings have seized and the motor will need to be replaced. You can also use a multimeter to determine if voltage is reaching the motor. If power is getting to the component, but the motor doesn't run or smells burnt, it is likely defective.

Air handler not cooling properly

Since the air handler's blower motor is the component that circulates the cooled air through the home's venting, a defective blower motor will result in the central air system not cooling properly.

Air handler circuit breaker keeps tripping

Since the air handler's blower motor is the component that circulates the air through the home's venting, a defective blower motor may result in the circuit breaker tripping. You can try disconnecting the motor from the control board and see if the breaker still trips. You can also use a multimeter to test the blower motor for an electrical short, or see if there are any burnt smells coming from the motor. You can also try turning the blower wheel by hand. If the wheel does not turn freely, it's likely the motor bearings have seized. If the motor doesn't turn freely or is shorted the blower motor will need to be replaced.
