Range vent hood fan or blower not working

Usually, when the blower motor hums but does not turn, it indicates that the motor shaft bearings are worn out. Some older, larger motors have oil spouts. If your motor has oil spouts, try adding oil to the motor bearings to get the fan to turn freely. If lubricating the motor bearings does not solve the problem, or if the motor can’t be lubricated, replace the exhaust fan motor.

Range vent hood motor is loud or noisy

The exhaust fan motor bearings might be worn out. To determine if the motor bearings are worn out, try wiggling the motor shaft back and forth. The motor shaft should not move at all. If the motor shaft moves even by a slight amount, the motor bearings are worn out. Some older, larger motors have oil spouts. If your motor has oil spouts, try adding oil to the motor bearings to get the fan to turn freely. If lubricating the motor bearings does not solve the problem, or if the motor can’t be lubricated, replace the exhaust fan motor.

Range vent hood turns off by itself

If the exhaust fan motor has power to it but keeps shutting off, the windings or bearings may be bad. Try turning the fan blade by hand. If the fan blade does not turn freely, or the motor keeps shutting off when it has power to it, the exhaust fan motor will need to be replaced.
