Heat pump not cooling

To determine if the fan motor is working, use a multimeter to test the incoming voltage to the motor. If the fan motor is receiving the correct voltage but the motor still won’t run, inspect the capacitor to ensure that it is not at fault. If the capacitor is not bulging or leaking, replace the fan motor.

Heat pump is noisy or loud

The fan motor has bearings that can wear out over time. When the bearings are worn out, they make loud noise. To check the bearings, try rotating the fan motor by hand. If the motor does not turn smoothly, replace it.

Heat pump coils frosting up

Since the fan motor is the component that circulates the air through unit to cool it, a defective motor could result in the coils frosting up. You can use a multimeter to test the fan motor for electrical continuity, a continuous electrical path present in the motor, as well as determine if power is reaching the motor. You can also try turning the fan blade by hand. If the blade does not turn freely, it's likely the motor bearings have seized and the motor will need to be replaced.

Heat pump is frequently cycling/short cycling

A faulty fan motor could cause the heat pump to short cycle. To determine if the motor is working, use a multimeter to test the incoming voltage to the motor. If the fan motor is receiving the correct voltage but the motor still won’t run, inspect the capacitor to ensure that it is not at fault. If the capacitor is not bulging or leaking, replace the fan motor.

Heat pump circuit breaker keeps tripping

If the outdoor heat pump unit's breaker or fuses keep tripping the fan motor may be to blame. To determine if the outdoor fan motor is shorted, use a multimeter to test the motor windings for a short to ground. If the outdoor fan motor blades will not turn freely, or the windings are shorted, it will need to be replaced.
