Prevent leaks with this felt seal, part number 280140, designed for select Maytag, Whirlpool, or Kenmore Dryers.

Most dryers have a felt seal at the front and rear of the drum to prevent heat from escaping the drum. If the seal is worn out or missing, the heat will not be drawn through the drum properly, causing the dryer to get too hot. Check the drum seal to ensure that it is creating a reliable seal around the drum. However, this is rarely the case. Before replacing the felt seal check all the more commonly defective parts. If you have determined that all of the other components are working properly, replace the felt seal.

Dryer makes noise

A felt seal is used to allow the dryer drum to rotate smoothly and to dampen noise while the dryer is operating. The seal may be installed around the front or back drum rim or along the front or back bulkhead the drum rests on. If the felt seal becomes worn, the dryer may begin making a loud scraping or grinding noise. You can replace a damaged or worn felt seal with a new one to resolve the issue. This will require fully removing the old seal, scraping off the old adhesive, applying new adhesive followed by the seal, and allowing about twenty minutes for the adhesive to dry before reassembling the dryer. It may be easier to install a new drum or bulkhead that already has the felt seal attached.

Dryer damaging clothes

Felt seals are used to keep the hot air from escaping from around the drum. Depending on the model you may only see one around the front or one around the front and one at the rear of the drum. If the felt seal gets torn or is missing, clothes can get caught inbetween the drum and the outer housing often called a "shroud". Open the door and inspect the felt seals for damage and replace them if necessary.

Dryer vibrating or shaking

Felt seals can be found on the front or rear bulkhead of the dryer or on the front and back rims of the drum itself. A worn or missing felt seal can interfere with the dryer drum rotating smoothly, resulting in the appliance vibrating or shaking during operation. Inspect the felt seal or seals for wear or damage and replace as necessary.
