Water heater not heating

To determine if the heating element is defective, use a multimeter test it for continuity. If the heating element does not have continuity, replace it.

Water heater too hot

If the heating element is shorted out, it will heat continuously, causing the water to get too hot. To determine if the heating element is shorted out, use a multimeter to test if the element is shorted to ground. If heating element is shorted out, replace it.

Water Heater runs out of hot water

Electric waters heaters depend on heating elements to warm the water in the tank. If one or more of the elements is faulty, the water won't be heated properly. To determine if the heating element is defective, use a multimeter test it for continuity. If the heating element does not have continuity, replace it.

Electric waters heaters depend on heating elements to warm the water in the tank. If an element is covered in sediment, it will make a hissing, popping, or rumbling noise. You can try uninstalling the heating elements and cleaning them but if one or both of the elements are corroded, they should be replaced with new ones.
