Dryer won't start

Restore proper tension with this idler pulley, part number 606540, built for select Danby Dryer.

A dryer's idler pulley puts tension on the belt to rotate the drum. If the idler pulley is worn out or damaged, the belt can break or fall off, and actuate a belt switch which can prevent the dryer from starting.

Dryer stopped spinning

The dryer's idler pulley puts tension on the drive belt so the belt can rotate the drum during operation. A defective idler pulley can cause the dryer drum to stop spinning. Inspect the idler pulley and make sure it spins freely on the shaft. If the idler pulley is stuck, worn or damaged, we recommend replacing the drum drive belt in addition to replacing the idler pulley.

Dryer drum not turning

Inspect the idler pulley for the dryer drum belt and make sure it spins freely on the shaft. If the idler pulley is stuck, worn or damaged, we recommend replacing the drum drive belt in addition to replacing the idler pulley.

Dryer makes noise

Inspect the idler pulley for signs of wear. If the idler pulley is worn or damaged, we recommend replacing the drive belt in addition to replacing the idler pulley.

Dryer has a burning smell

The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt to prevent it from slipping. If the idler wheel is damaged or stops turning, the belt can slip on the drive pulley, producing a burning smell. If your idler pulley is damaged or doesn't turn, you should replace it. Replacing the drive belt is also recommended.

Dryer vibrating or shaking

A worn or stuck idler pulley may be unable to smoothly allow the drive belt to rotate the drum efficiently, resulting in the appliance vibrating or shaking. Inspect the pulley for any wear or damage and confirm it rotates freely. If the pulley shows signs of damage or doesn't turn easily it should be replaced.

Gas Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry — Dryer Troubleshooting

This free troubleshooting video shows quick maintenance tips including cleaning the lint filter, lint screen housing, venting and inside the cabinet for keeping your dryer working safely and efficiently. Vent Interior of dryer cabinet The lint produced by clothes tumbling in a dryer is normally trapped by the lint filter. However, some lint invariably escapes and accumulates on the inside of the dryer cabinet. At least once a year, check the inside of the cabinet, and clean it if necessary. Do this more frequently if the dryer is used heavily. Lint filter Area under lint filter You can also clean the chute, duct, or area that the lint filter fits into. If necessary, use a vacuum cleaner to reach into the duct and clean out any lint. Note... If the lint build-up is severe, it's important to disassemble the dryer and clean out the lint more thoroughly. If you're unable to find the information you need on our website, we suggest that you use a search online to find a reliable online repair forum. It's likely that your question has already been answered there. We also recommend contacting your product's manufacturer or calling a local repair technician.
