Furnace not heating

The wall thermostat has electrical contacts that control the power supply to the furnace. If the contacts in the thermostat fail, the furnace will not turn on. To determine if the thermostat is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the wall thermostat does not have continuity, replace it.

Furnace blower not running

Check to see if the furnace blower comes on when you jump the control board contacts for the red (“R”) and green (“G”) wire terminals. If it does, then it's likely the wall thermostat is defective and unable to alert the furnace control board to turn on the blower. You will need to replace the wall thermostat to regain control of the blower.

If the contact that controls the blower motor sticks closed, it will send continuous voltage to the blower motor, causing the motor to run continuously. To determine if the thermostat is defective, use a multi-meter to test it for continuity. If the wall thermostat shows continuity between the (R) and (G) terminals when the thermostat is in the off position  the thermostat has failed and will need to be replaced.

To determine if the thermostat is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity in the respective modes. If the wall thermostat does not have continuity, replace it.

Furnace blower is running constantly but there is no heat

The wall thermostat has electrical contacts that control the power supply to the furnace. If the contact that controls the blower motor sticks closed, it will send continuous voltage to the blower motor, causing the motor to run continuously. To determine if the thermostat is defective, use a multi-meter to test it for continuity. If the wall thermostat shows continuity between the (R) and (G) terminals when the thermostat is in the off position the thermostat has failed and will need to be replaced.

The thermostat can be powered with 24 volts from a control board on a separate unit like a furnace or air handler, or from batteries in the thermostat itself. The thermostat also has terminals to receive and distribute low voltage 24 volt power to run different HVAC products such as a furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump. If the wall thermostat is receiving power but the display is dead or it will not send power out in the appropriate modes, the wall thermostat will need to be replaced.
