DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the oil pump on Poulan pole pruners. The most common reason for replacing the pump is when any part of the pump is worn or damaged, causing the chain bar and cutting chain to not be lubricated properly.
All of the information in this oil pump replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Poulan, Poulan Pro, Weedeater
Tools used: ratchet and socket, combo wrench, Torx head screwdriver, flat-head screwdriver, snap ring pliers, slip-joint pliers
Step-By-Step Instructions1
To replace the oil pump on your pole pruner, first confirm that there is little or no oil left in the oil tank.
2
Next, loosen the locking nut then unscrew the knob securing the lower drive shaft.
3
Depress the alignment pin to fully release the lower drive shaft.
4
Now set the pruner head on a sturdy surface and remove the nut securing the drive sprocket cover.
5
Remove the cover and lift the chain bar and chain off.
6
Next, remove the mounting screws securing the oil tank.
7
Use a flathead screwdriver to help pry the tank off of the oil tube.
8
Be prepared for some oil to spill.
9
Now remove the center screw and loosen the outer screws securing the pruner head to the lower shaft.
11
Next, remove the snap ring and pull off the drive sprocket and washer.
12
Remove the remaining screws securing the gear case housing.
14
Use the screwdriver to help remove the main drive gear.
15
Lift out the sprocket gear and remove the old oil pump assembly.
16
You’re now ready to install the new oil pump assembly.
17
Insert the barrel into the oil block, making sure the two holes in the barrel are properly aligned.
18
Now insert the plunger into the barrel and align the assembly in the housing.
19
Reposition the sprocket gear and make sure it turns the new oil pump.
20
Replace the main drive gear and lubricate it with some grease.
21
Reassemble the two halves of the housing and replace the screws – don’t fully tighten the two screws near the shaft hole.
22
Replace the washer and the drive sprocket and secure them with the snap ring.
23
Insert the lower drive shaft into the pruner head.
24
Use a small screwdriver to help align the shaft then reinstall the center screw and tighten the outer screws.
25
Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old fitting from the oil tank.
26
Replace it with the new fitting.
27
Now replace the tank by inserting the fitting into the oil tube.
28
Fully position the tank then replace the mounting screws to secure.
29
Loop the chain on the drive sprocket as you align the chain bar on the mounting bolts.
30
To replace the cover, the chain tensioner will need to be inserted into the hole in the chain bar.
31
You will probably need to rotate the tension adjustment screw counter-clockwise to properly align the tensioner.
32
With the cover in place, hand-tighten the nut.
33
Now rotate the adjustment screw clockwise until there is no slack in the chain.
34
Fully tighten the nut and confirm that the chain is taut, but moves freely.
35
Insert the lower drive shaft into the upper drive shaft until the alignment pin snaps into place.
36
Tighten the knob first then tighten the locking nut.
37
Replace the oil in the oil tank and your pole pruner will be ready for use.
