DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the ignition coil on Ryobi and Homelite hedge trimmers. The most common reason for replacing the ignition coil is when the trimmer won’t start and the ignition coil proves to be at fault.
All of the information in this ignition coil replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Ryobi, Homelite
Tools used: T25 Torx bit, spark plug wrench, clutch tool, rope, T20 Torx bit, needle-nose pliers, business card
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Before you replace the ignition coil on your hedge trimmer first make sure the engine has cooled.
2
To prevent the engine from accidentally starting. Remove the wire and boot from the spark plug.
3
Turn the hedge trimmer over and use a t-25 torx bit screwdriver to remove the mounting screws securing the blade and handle assembly.
4
Separate the assembly from the engine housing.
5
Use a spark plug wrench to help unthread the spark plug.
6
Now confirm that the piston is in the “down” position.
7
Insert a cord into the cylinder to prevent the piston from moving.
8
Use a clutch removal tool to loosen the clutch by rotating it counter-clockwise then unthread the clutch from the engine shaft.
10
Use a t-20 torx bit screwdriver to remove the mounting screws securing the recoil assembly.
12
Make sure the flywheel magnets are rotated away from the ignition coil.
13
Now remove the mounting screws securing the coil.
14
Disconnect the wire to fully release the old coil.
15
Install the new ignition coil by positioning it on the engine.
16
Secure the coil loosely with the screws.
17
Make sure to align the grounding wire under the rear screw.
18
Now pull the coil back and tighten the screws.
19
Remove the cord from the cylinder.
20
Insert a business card between the coil and flywheel then rotate the flywheel so the magnets align with the card.
21
Loosen the screws to align the coil the correct distance from the flywheel.
22
Re-tighten the screws and remove the business card.
23
Connect the wire to the new coil.
24
Confirm that the piston is in the “down” position and reinsert the cord to secure.
25
Realign the recoil assembly and replace all of the mounting screws.
27
Thread the clutch clockwise onto the shaft and tighten.
28
Remove the cord from the cylinder.
29
Rethread the spark plug but be careful not to over tighten.
30
Carefully reposition the blade and handle assembly on the engine housing and replace the mounting screws to secure.
31
Reattach the wire and boot to the spark plug and your hedge trimmer should be ready for use.
