Craftsman, Husqvarna, Ariens
Tools needed: 5/8 inch socket, pipe wrench
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Before you replace the drive belt on your riding mower make sure the ignition switch is in the “off” position and the key has been removed.
2
Confirm that the mower deck is at its lowest position and that the clutch actuator lever is in the “off” position.
3
Now remove the retaining pins securing the support arms and detach the arms to release the mower deck from the frame.
4
Next, release the deck belt from the engine pulley and the belt guides.
5
Detach the clutch cable from the retainer.
6
You can now slide the deck out from under the frame.
7
Now engage the brake and use a 5/8th inch socket and a pipe wrench to loosen and unthread the drive pulley mounting bolt.
8
Detach the pulley and remove the old belt from the pulleys, guides and fan if still intact.
9
You’re now ready to install the new drive belt.
10
Loop the belt over the fan and align it on the transmission pulley with the v-groove facing inward.
11
Now feed the belt through the chassis and over the steering plate.
12
Loop the belt on the drive pulley.
13
Reposition the pulley on the engine shaft, keeping the belt on the inside of the guides.
14
Replace the mounting bolt to secure the pulley.
15
Now align the right side of the belt on the front and middle idler pulleys in an “s” formation and secure the left side of the belt between the belt guide and the rear pulley.
16
With the new belt installed, you can disengage the brake and slide the mower deck back under the frame.
17
Secure the clutch cable in the retainer.
18
Realign the deck belt on the engine pulley and the belt guides.
19
Reposition the support arms and secure them using the washers where applicable and the retaining pins.
