DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the grass chute (or deflector shield) on Craftsman riding lawn mowers. The most common reason for replacing the chute is if it is broken.
All of the information in this grass chute replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Craftsman, Husqvarna, Poulan
Tools used: 1/2” socket, vise-grip pliers, large flat-head screwdriver, 7/16” socket, hammer
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Before you replace the grass deflector on your riding mower make sure the ignition switch is in the “off” position and the key has been removed.
2
Confirm that the mower deck is at its lowest position.
3
Now lift up the deflector and support the bottom of the mounting bolts as you use a half-inch socket to unthread the nuts.
4
Remove the bolts and pull the old deflector free.
5
Prepare the new grass deflector for installation by transferring the pin, spring and bracket assembly from the old deflector to the new one.
6
To do this, use vice-grip pliers to secure the pin as you use a large flat-head screwdriver to pry the pin retainer off.
7
With the retainer removed, slide out the pin and remove the bracket and spring.
8
Align the spring on the new deflector.
9
Depress the spring lever as you position the bracket then insert the pin.
10
We recommend using a new retainer to secure the pin – support the pin and use a 7/16th inch socket and hammer to fully seat the retainer.
11
Insert a mounting bolt through the bottom of the mower deck then position the new deflector.
12
Thread a nut to secure the bolt.
13
Insert the second mounting bolt then support the bolts as you finish threading the nuts and tighten.
