04:06
This video provides step-by-step repair instructions for replacing the needle valve kit on a Briggs and Stratton small engine (commonly found in riding lawn mowers). The most common reason for replacing the needle valve is when the engine is leaking gas.

All of the information for this needle valve kit replacement video is applicable to the following brands:
Briggs & Stratton, Toro, John Deere

Tools needed: 1/4 inch socket or nut driver, 3/8th inch socket or nut driver, pliers

Step By Step Instructions

1
Before you replace the idle mixture adjustment screw on your engine carburetor, make sure the engine has cooled, the ignition switch is in the off position, and the key has been removed if applicable.
2
If necessary, disconnect the headlight wire harness.
3
Then, lift up the hood or engine cover and detach it.
4
Now, rotate the air filter cover retaining knobs counterclockwise and pull off the cover.
5
Lift out the air filter.
6
Use a quarter-inch socket or nut driver to unthread the screw inside the filter housing.
7
Now, use a 3/8 inch socket or wrench to unthread the four blower housing mounting bolts.
8
Detach the oil drain and lift off the blower housing.
9
To avoid breaking off the old idle mixture adjustment screw, use pliers to split the limiter cap.
10
With the cap removed, carefully unthread the screw and remove the spring.
11
You're now ready to install the new idle mixture adjustment screw.
12
Slide the new spring onto the screw.
13
Thread the screw into the carburetor until it stops, then unthread it approximately one and a quarter turns.
14
Reposition the blower housing.
15
Make sure the housing is properly seated on the air diverter.
16
Rethread and tighten the mounting bolts to secure the housing.
17
The longer bolts go in the back.
18
Replace the screw in the filter housing.
19
Reposition the air filter.
20
Realign the cover and rotate the retaining knobs clockwise to secure.
21
Reattach the oil drain tube to the blower housing.
22
Reinstall the hood or engine cover and reconnect the headlight wire harness if applicable.
23
You may need to adjust the new idle mixture adjustment screw for the engine to idle smoothly.
24
Once the idle is set, snap on the new limiter cap.
