DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step repair instructions for replacing the torsion spring on a Craftsman riding lawn mower. The most common reason for replacing the torsion spring is when it is broken or missing, causing the grass not to be dispersed properly.
All of the information for this torsion spring replacement video is applicable to the following brands:
Craftsman, Ariens, Husqvarna, Weedeater, Poulan, Dixon
Tools needed: ½ inch socket, vice-grip pliers, large flat-head screwdriver, 7/16th inch socket, hammer
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Before you replace the grass deflector torsion spring on your riding mower make sure the ignition switch is in the “off” position and the key has been removed.
2
Confirm that the mower deck is at its lowest position.
3
Now lift up the deflector and support the bottom of the mounting bolts as you use a half-inch socket to unthread the nuts.
4
Remove the bolts and pull the deflector free.
5
Use vice-grip pliers to secure the pin as you use a large flat-head screwdriver to pry the pin retainer off.
6
With the retainer removed, slide out the pin and remove the bracket and the old torsion spring.
7
Install the new torsion spring by aligning it on the deflector.
8
Depress the spring lever as you reposition the bracket then insert the pin.
9
We recommend using a new retainer to secure the pin – support the pin and use a 7/16th inch socket and hammer to fully seat the retainer.
10
Insert a mounting bolt through the bottom of the mower deck then reposition the deflector.
11
Thread a nut to secure the bolt.
12
Insert the second mounting bolt then support the bolts as you finish threading the nuts and tighten.
