DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing a brake lever spring on Honda small engines. The most common reason for replacing a spring is if it is broken, causing the engine to stop or fail to start.
All of the information in this spring replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Honda
Tools used: 10mm socket, adjustable wrench, strap wrench, 19mm socket, flywheel puller, needle nose pliers, 7mm socket
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Before you replace the brake lever spring on your engine first make sure the engine has cooled.
2
Next, you should remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting.
3
We recommend performing this procedure with little or no fuel in the tank.
4
Release the starter rope from the guide and note the orientation of the recoil starter.
5
Now use a 10mm socket to unthread the mounting nuts securing the starter.
6
Remove the starter and lift off the engine shroud and fuel tank.
7
Next, detach the ignition coil wire.
8
Now use the 10mm socket to unthread the ignition coil mounting bolt and an adjustable wrench to unthread the mounting post.
10
Depress the bail arm to release the brake and secure the arm.
11
Use a strap wrench to secure the flywheel and a 19mm socket to unthread the flywheel mounting nut.
12
With the nut removed, lift off the cooling fan.
13
You can now use a flywheel puller to help detach the flywheel – the flywheel has markings to indicate where the puller arms should be positioned.
14
We recommend using a business card to protect the magnet.
15
Once the flywheel has been removed release the bail arm.
16
Use can use needle-nose pliers to detach the old brake lever spring if still intact.
17
Install the new brake lever spring by attaching the short end to the engine block and the long end to the brake lever.
18
Depress the bail arm and secure it.
19
Confirm that the flywheel key is intact in the crankshaft then realign the flywheel.
20
Reposition the cooling fan and insert the washer.
21
Thread the flywheel mounting nut and tighten.
22
Use a torque wrench to torque the nut to 55 foot pounds.
23
Reposition the ignition coil on the engine then thread the mounting bolt and post loosely.
24
Pull the coil back and tighten the bolt and post.
25
Now rotate the flywheel so the magnet aligns with the coil and insert a business card between the coil and the flywheel.
26
Loosen the bolt and post to align the coil the correct distance from the flywheel.
27
Retighten the bolt and post then remove the card.
28
Connect the ignition coil wire.
29
Reposition the engine shroud and fuel tank.
30
Properly realign the starter then thread and tighten the mounting nuts to secure.
31
Extend the starter rope secure the rope in the guide and release the bail arm.
32
With the repair completed reattach the wire and boot to the spark plug refill the fuel tank and your engine should be ready for use.
