03:19
This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the carburetor on Briggs and Stratton small engines, commonly found in lawn mowers, riding tractors, zero-turn radius mowers, wheeled edgers, pressure washers, and generators. The most common reason for replacing the carburetor is if the engine is hard to start, leaks gas, runs poorly, won’t start or stay running.

All the information in this carburetor replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Briggs & Stratton

Tools used: flat-head screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, nutdriver, clamp cutter, socket wrench

Step By Step Instructions

1
Before you begin the repair, make sure the engine has cooled and remove the wire and boot from the spark plug.
2
Your first step is to loosen the screw securing the air filter cover.
3
Pull the cover off along with the air filter and the pre-cleaner if your engine is equipped with one.
4
Now remove the screw to release the control cover.
5
Remove the screws securing the filter base plate then detach the breather tube and set the plate aside.
6
Release the clamp securing the fuel line.
7
Pull the fuel line off of the carburetor and plug the end to prevent a gas spill.
8
Next, remove the screw to release the choke lever assembly and move it aside.
9
Remove the mounting bolts that secure the carburetor.
10
Rotate the old carburetor to remove it from the throttle control lever and pull the old “o” ring from the engine intake tube. You’re now ready to install the new carburetor.
11
Insert the new “o” ring onto the intake tube.
12
Position the new carburetor onto the throttle control lever and mount it to the engine.
13
Secure it with the bolts.
14
Reposition the choke lever assembly and secure it with the screw.
15
Reattach the fuel line and secure it with the clamp.
16
Replace the gasket in the filter base plate with the new provided gasket then reinsert the breather tube and secure the plate with the screws.
17
Replace the control cover and secure it with the screw.
18
Use a rag to clean off the filter cover if necessary then reinsert the pre-cleaner into the cover with the arrows pointing upward if applicable.
19
Position the new air filter on top with the paper element facing the pre-cleaner.
20
Insert the cover’s tabs into the slots, rotate upward and tighten the screw.
21
You can now reattach the spark plug wire and boot.
