Step-By-Step Instructions1
To replace the dual-run capacitor in this goodman central air condensing unit…
2
… you will need a 5/16th inch nut driver and a flat-head screwdriver.
3
Before you begin, shut off the power to the unit.
4
You can do this by removing the fuses from the disconnect box…
5
…or switching off the circuit breaker.
6
Shut off the power to the furnace as well.
7
Use the 5/16th inch nut driver to unthread the two lower screws securing the control box access cover.
8
Loosen the two upper screws directly above the access cover so you can pull the cover down to remove.
9
You should release the potentially stored electrical charge in the capacitor to avoid injury…
10
… by placing the flat-head screwdriver across each set of terminals – avoid touching the metal portion of the tool when doing this.
11
Note the orientation of the wires connected to the capacitor…
12
… then disconnect all four wires.
13
Now use the 5/16th inch nut driver to unthread the screw to loosen the mounting strap so you can remove the old capacitor.
14
To install the new dual-run capacitor…
15
… attach the purple and red wires to the common terminal, indicated by the letter “c”, on the capacitor…
16
… the brown wire to the fan terminal…
17
… and the yellow wire to the “herm”, or compressor, terminal.
18
Position the capacitor behind the mounting strap…
19
… and rethread the screw to secure the strap.
20
Reposition the access cover…
21
… and replace the two lower screws to secure.
22
Now tighten the two upper screws.
23
Restore power to the unit…
25
… and the central air condensing unit should be ready for use.
