01:29
This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the door catch and strike mechanism on Whirlpool electric dryers. The most common reason for replacing the mechanism is when the dryer door won’t stay closed.

All the information in this door latch replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Kenmore, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Roper, Estate, Maytag, Crosley, Inglis, Amana, Admiral

Tools used: Phillips head screwdriver, pliers

Step By Step Instructions

1
On most models, your first step is to remove the hinge screws to detach the dryer door.
2
Next, remove all screws from the outside of the door and split the door panels apart to access the catch.
3
If your model has a round door with a glass window, you'll want to remove the screws that secure the outer door panel, leaving the ones that secure the glass intact.
4
With the outer door panel removed, you can now access this model's two catches.
5
If still intact, use pliers to squeeze the old door catch springs and push or slide the catches out of the door panel.
6
Depending on your model, you can also use the pliers to pull out the old strike.
7
You're now ready to install the new door catch.
8
Choose the appropriate catch for your model and snap it into position.
9
Join the two door panels together and secure all the screws.
10
If applicable, you can snap a new strike into place as well.
11
Replace the door on the hinges and reinstall the hinge screws if your model requires.
