If your dryer smells like burning while running, act quickly but stay calm — that odor usually points to a mechanical problem rather than a house fire. The most common cause is excessive lint blocking the lint filter or vent, which can ignite or overheat the heating element, so clean the lint screen and venting first. Next most likely is a worn or slipping drive belt that heats from friction; if the belt is frayed or stretched, check that the drum and idler pulley turn freely and replace the belt. A shorted main control board can also produce a burning smell, so inspect the board for burn marks or melted components. Less likely but still possible are a stuck blower or a worn blower belt, and a seized idler pulley or idler assembly that lets the belt slip and smoke.
