Range vent hood turning on by itself

If your range vent hood is turning on by itself, the thermostat is the most likely cause. Some range vent hoods have a thermostat that automatically starts the blower when heat inside the hood reaches a set temperature, then shuts it off after the hood cools. Check your owner's manual and wiring diagram to confirm whether this feature is normal. If the blower or lights turn on and off randomly, the range vent hood control board may have burnt relay contacts or an internal short. A worn touchpad can also close the circuit intermittently and send an unwanted signal. Next, check the user control and display board for buttons that activate inconsistently, followed by the main control board, which also uses relays to control the blower and lights. The control module is less common, but it can cause random operation if it shorts. Test the touchpad, switches, and control panel before replacing that part. Always enter your range vent hood's model number to find the exact replacement part for your specific appliance, including the correct thermostat, control board, touchpad, or user control and display board.

01 - Range Vent Hood Thermostat

If the temperature in the hood gets hot there may be a thermostat that will automatically turn on the vent blower until the temperature cools down. Check the owner's manual and /or the wiring diagram to see if your vent hood has this feature.

02 - Range Vent Hood Control Board

The control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on the control board may be bad.
Common

03 - Range Vent Hood Touchpad

When the touchpad buttons are pressed a circuit is closed sending a signal to the control board. If the button is worn it can cause the circuit to close intermittently, turning on the hood.
Common

04 - Range Vent Hood User Control and Display Board

The buttons on the user control and display board may be only intermittently activating. To determine if the control and display board is defective, try pressing each of the buttons on the control panel. If some of the buttons are not responding correctly, replace the user control and display board.
Common

05 - Range Vent Hood Main Control Board

The main control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on, the main control board may be bad.
Common

06 - Range Vent Hood Control Module

The control module receives inputs from the control panel switches to turn the lights and blower on and off. If the control module shorts out, the blower or lights may go on and off randomly. Because this is not a common problem make sure the control panel and switches are tested before replacing the control module.
