When an Universal range vent hood is turning on by itself, the thermostat is the most likely cause. Some range vent hoods have a thermostat that automatically starts the blower when the hood gets too hot, then shuts it off after the temperature drops. Check the owner's manual or wiring diagram before replacing any parts. If the blower or lights turn on and off randomly, the control board may have burnt relay contacts or an internal short. A worn touchpad can also close its circuit intermittently and send an unwanted start signal. Next, check the user control and display board by pressing each control button. Buttons that do not respond correctly can indicate a defective board. The main control board has the same relay-related failure possibility, while a shorted control module is less common. Test the control panel and switches before replacing the module. Whether the issue affects the vent hood fan, lights, or both, enter your range vent hood model number to find the exact replacement thermostat, control board, touchpad, user control and display board, or control module for your Universal appliance.
01 - Universal Range Vent Hood Thermostat
If the temperature in the hood gets hot there may be a thermostat that will automatically turn on the vent blower until the temperature cools down. Check the owner's manual and /or the wiring diagram to see if your vent hood has this feature.

The control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on the control board may be bad.
When the touchpad buttons are pressed a circuit is closed sending a signal to the control board. If the button is worn it can cause the circuit to close intermittently, turning on the hood.
04 - Universal Range Vent Hood User Control and Display Board
The buttons on the user control and display board may be only intermittently activating. To determine if the control and display board is defective, try pressing each of the buttons on the control panel. If some of the buttons are not responding correctly, replace the user control and display board.
The main control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on, the main control board may be bad.
The control module receives inputs from the control panel switches to turn the lights and blower on and off. If the control module shorts out, the blower or lights may go on and off randomly. Because this is not a common problem make sure the control panel and switches are tested before replacing the control module.
