When your NuTone range vent hood turns on by itself, the thermostat is the most likely cause. Some hoods use a thermostat to start the vent blower automatically when heat builds up, then shut it off after the temperature drops. Check your owner's manual and wiring diagram to confirm whether your NuTone range vent hood has this feature. If automatic operation is not expected, the control board is the next likely problem. Burned relay contacts or a shorting board can send intermittent power to the blower or lights, making them turn on and off randomly. A worn touchpad, user control and display board, or main control board can also send false signals when a button circuit activates intermittently. The control module is less common, so test the control panel and switches before replacing it. Disconnect power before testing or replacing electrical parts, and use your model number to find the exact thermostat, control board, touchpad, or other replacement part for your specific NuTone range vent hood.
01 - Nutone Range Vent Hood Thermostat
If the temperature in the hood gets hot there may be a thermostat that will automatically turn on the vent blower until the temperature cools down. Check the owner's manual and /or the wiring diagram to see if your vent hood has this feature.

The control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on the control board may be bad.
When the touchpad buttons are pressed a circuit is closed sending a signal to the control board. If the button is worn it can cause the circuit to close intermittently, turning on the hood.
04 - Nutone Range Vent Hood User Control and Display Board
The buttons on the user control and display board may be only intermittently activating. To determine if the control and display board is defective, try pressing each of the buttons on the control panel. If some of the buttons are not responding correctly, replace the user control and display board.
The main control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on, the main control board may be bad.
The control module receives inputs from the control panel switches to turn the lights and blower on and off. If the control module shorts out, the blower or lights may go on and off randomly. Because this is not a common problem make sure the control panel and switches are tested before replacing the control module.
