If your Whirlpool range vent hood turns on by itself, the behavior may be normal if the hood has a thermostat that automatically starts the vent blower when the temperature rises. Check the owner's manual or wiring diagram first to confirm whether this feature is included. If the blower or lights turn on intermittently when the hood is cool, the control board is a more likely cause. Burned relay contacts or a shorted board can send power to the fan or lights without a button press. A worn touchpad can also close its circuit intermittently, while a faulty user control and display board may activate buttons incorrectly. Test each control panel button for proper response before replacing that board. The main control board can fail in the same way as the control board, and a shorted control module is possible but less common, so test the switches and control panel first. Enter your Whirlpool range vent hood model number to find the exact replacement thermostat, control board, touchpad, user control and display board, or control module for your appliance.
01 - Whirlpool Range Vent Hood Thermostat
If the temperature in the hood gets hot there may be a thermostat that will automatically turn on the vent blower until the temperature cools down. Check the owner's manual and /or the wiring diagram to see if your vent hood has this feature.

The control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on the control board may be bad.
When the touchpad buttons are pressed a circuit is closed sending a signal to the control board. If the button is worn it can cause the circuit to close intermittently, turning on the hood.
04 - Whirlpool Range Vent Hood User Control and Display Board
The buttons on the user control and display board may be only intermittently activating. To determine if the control and display board is defective, try pressing each of the buttons on the control panel. If some of the buttons are not responding correctly, replace the user control and display board.
The main control board has relays that send power to the fan and lights. If the contacts in the relays become burnt, or the board is shorting out, they may make contact intermittently. If the fan or lights are turning off and on, the main control board may be bad.
The control module receives inputs from the control panel switches to turn the lights and blower on and off. If the control module shorts out, the blower or lights may go on and off randomly. Because this is not a common problem make sure the control panel and switches are tested before replacing the control module.
