DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the door springs on Whirlpool dishwashers. The most common reason for replacing the door springs is when one is broken, causing the dishwasher door to fall open when unlatched. They should always be replaced in pairs, even if only one breaks, because they wear at the same rate.
All of the information in this door spring replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Amana, Ikea, Estate, Magic Chef, Inglis, Crosley, Roper
Tools used: multi-screwdriver, channel lock pliers, adjustable wrench
Step-By-Step Instructions1
To make replacing a door spring easier, we recommend removing the dishwasher from the cabinet.
2
To do this, turn off the power to your dishwasher
3
Shut off the water supply valve.
4
Next, rotate the lower access panel fasteners counter-clockwise to remove then pull out the access panel and sound dampening pad.
5
Loosen the nut to remove the water supply line from the inlet valve.
6
Be prepared for some water to spill out.
7
Now remove the screw to release the junction box cover.
8
Note the location of the wires then untwist the wire nuts to disconnect the wires.
9
Loosen the screw securing the grounding wire retainer and pull off the wire.
10
Use a flathead screwdriver to help remove the strain relief nut and detach the strain relief from the junction box.
11
Next, disconnect the drain hose from the sink or garbage disposer and feed it through the cabinet.
12
Open the dishwasher door and remove the mounting bracket screws.
13
To move the dishwasher, you may need to adjust the legs to lower the appliance.
14
Now, to avoid damage, very carefully pull the dishwasher away from the cabinet.
15
If still intact, note the location of the old spring in the base frame.
16
Now disconnect the spring from the frame and detach it from the hinge link.
17
Install the new door spring by first hooking the small end of the spring onto the link then insert the opposite end into the appropriate hole in the base frame.
18
Support the dishwasher and confirm that the door opens and closes properly.
19
Make sure the end of the drain hose is accessible through the cabinet wall then gently slide the dishwasher back into the cabinet.
20
Adjust the leveling legs if necessary.
21
Replace the screws to secure the mounting brackets to the cabinet or countertop.
22
Feed the drain hose through the cabinet and connect it to the sink drain or garbage disposer.
23
Make sure the hose is elevated above the connection point.
24
Fully position the wire strain relief in the junction box and secure the strain relief nut.
25
Connect the wires using the wire nuts.
26
Reposition the grounding wire and tighten the screw to secure the retainer.
27
Align the cover plate and replace the screw to secure.
28
Attach the water supply line to the inlet port and tighten the nut to secure.
29
Reposition the lower access panel and sound dampening pad then secure the panel with the fasteners.
30
You’re now ready to turn the water supply back on as well as the power and confirm that the dishwasher is working properly.
