Briggs & Stratton Generator Stops Running? Carburetor #591378

05:40
This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the carburetor for Briggs and Stratton small engines commonly found in generators. The most common reason for replacing the carburetor is when it is clogged, causing the engine to not run, run poorly, or only run for a few seconds, and cleaning the carburetor does not solve the problem.

All of the information in this carburetor replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Briggs & Stratton

Tools used: multi-screwdriver, 5/16” socket, 10mm socket, pliers, flat-head bit, E5 external Torx bit, needle-nose pliers

Step By Step Instructions

1
Before you replace the carburetor on your engine first make sure the engine has cooled.
2
Next, you should remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting and close the fuel valve.
3
Now use a 5/16th inch socket to remove the mounting screws securing the air filter cover.
4
Pull the cover and filter off.
5
Place the choke lever in the “choke” position then pull the lever up to remove.
6
Next, detach the breather tube from the filter housing.
7
Now use a 10 mm socket to remove the mounting nuts securing the housing.
8
Pull the housing off of the mounting posts and move it out of the way.
9
Release the clamp securing the fuel line to the carburetor and pull the fuel line off - be prepared for some fuel to spill.
10
Remove the air filter housing gasket then use an e-5 external torx bit to unthread the mounting posts securing the carburetor.
11
Next, detach the throttle linkage and spring to completely remove the old carburetor.
12
Prepare the new carburetor for installation by first removing the choke plate and shaft.
13
Now transfer the seal from the removed choke shaft to the choke shaft appropriate to your engine model.
14
Position the new shaft then insert the choke plate and snap it into place.
15
Next, install the new throttle linkage and spring on the throttle arm.
16
Connect the throttle linkage and spring to the new carburetor.
17
Insert the mounting posts into the new carburetor and slide on the new spacer gaskets along with the existing spacer.
18
Thread the mounting posts into the intake manifold and tighten with the e-5 external torx bit.
19
Attach the fuel line to the carburetor and secure it with the retaining clamp.
20
Slide the air filter housing gasket onto the mounting posts.
21
Realign the air filter housing and replace the mounting nuts to secure.
22
Reattach the breather tube to the filter housing.
23
Make sure the new choke shaft is in the “choke” position then push the new choke lever into place.
