09:06
This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the capacitor on Whirlpool microwaves. The most common reason for replacing the capacitor is when the microwave doesn’t heat and testing the capacitor proves it is at fault.

All of the information in this capacitor replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Whirlpool, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Estate, Amana, Maytag, Roper, Jenn Air, Inglis

Tools used: Phillips head screwdriver, insulated screwdriver

Step By Step Instructions

1
Because of the high voltage and high current used by microwave ovens, be aware that repairing this appliance poses a substantial risk for injury or death if precautions are not taken. You should always unplug the microwave before you attempt any disassembly.
2
Since high voltage capacitors used in microwaves may retain a charge even after the microwave has been unplugged, we recommend that only experienced professionals access and replace internal components. To replace the capacitor in your microwave oven, you will need to uninstall the appliance. This will require two people.
3
Have an assistant support the microwave while you remove the mounting bolts from the upper cabinet.
4
Carefully tilt the microwave down and pull the power cord through the hole in the cabinet.
5
Now, lift the microwave off the rear mounting bracket and set it on a sturdy surface, resting on a towel or blanket.
6
Unthread the screws securing the grill.
7
Pull the grill forward from the top to remove.
8
If still in place, remove the glass turntable and support.
9
Now tip the microwave so it rests on its back panel and remove the bottom panel by using a phillips-head screwdriver to unthread the mounting screws.
10
With the screws removed, detach the panel and disconnect the wire harness.
11
Detach the grommet from the frame and pull the wire free.
12
Note the orientation of the turntable motor wires then slide off the insulators.
13
Depress the locking tabs to disconnect the wires and you can fully remove the bottom panel.
14
Return the microwave to its upright position and remove all of the screws securing the cabinet.
15
Unthread the screws securing the blower cover and remove the cover.
16
You can now fully remove the cabinet.
17
You should release the potentially stored electrical charge in the capacitor to avoid injury.
18
You can do this by placing a screwdriver with an insulated handle across each set of terminals.
19
Be very careful not to touch the screwdriver blade when doing this.
20
Now unthread the screws securing the inner access panel.
21
Remove the panel.
22
Note the orientation of the capacitor wires then depress the locking tabs, if necessary, to disconnect the wires.
23
Unthread the mounting screw.
24
You can now slide the old capacitor and bracket out.
25
Prepare the new capacitor for installation by transferring the mounting bracket from the old component to the new one.
26
Position the capacitor and bracket in the frame and replace the mounting screw to secure.
27
Connect the wires to the appropriate terminals.
28
Replace the inner access panel and rethread the screws to secure.
29
Make sure the power cord is secured then reposition the cabinet by aligning the top edge first.
30
Push the sides forward making sure the tabs on the sides of the cabinet align with the frame.
31
Replace the screws to secure the cabinet.
32
Reposition the blower cover and secure it with the screws.
33
Rest the microwave on its back panel.
34
Replace the bottom panel by first reconnecting the turntable motor wires to the appropriate terminals.
35
Slide the insulators over the terminals.
36
Align the wire in the frame and secure it with the grommet then reconnect the wire harness.
37
Fully reposition the bottom panel and secure it with the screws.
38
Return the microwave to its upright position.
39
Realign the grill and snap it into place then rethread the screws to secure.
40
Now carefully reposition the microwave on the mounting bracket by hooking the back edge of the appliance on the bracket tabs.
41
Insert the power cord through the hole in the upper cabinet.
42
Lift the microwave up and secure the mounting bolts.
43
Plug the power cord back in.
