DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the high-voltage diode on GE microwaves. The most common reason for replacing the diode is when the microwave doesn’t heat.
All of the information in this diode replacement video is applicable to the following brands: GE, Kenmore, Hotpoint, RCA
Tools used: Phillips head screwdriver, insulated needle-nose pliers
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Because of the high voltage and high current used by microwave ovens, be aware that repairing this appliance poses a substantial risk for injury or death if precautions are not taken. You should always unplug the microwave before you attempt any disassembly. Since high voltage capacitors used in microwaves may retain a charge even after the microwave has been unplugged, we recommend that only experienced professionals access and replace internal components.
2
To replace the high voltage diode, use a phillips-head screwdriver to unthread the two mounting screws securing the grill.
3
With the screws unthreaded, open the oven door then slide the grill to the left and lift it up to remove.
4
Next, remove the control panel mounting screw.
5
Lift the control panel up to detach.
6
Next, remove the screw securing the inner access panel.
7
Release the panel from the retaining clips.
8
To avoid injury, you should release the potentially stored electrical charge in the capacitor.
9
You can do this by using needle-nose pliers with an insulated handle to touch both terminals simultaneously.
10
Be very careful not to touch the metal portion of the tool.
11
Now, remove the screw securing the diode to the frame.
12
Use the pliers to pull the old diode free of the capacitor.
13
Install the new high voltage diode by first connecting it to the terminal on the capacitor.
14
Now thread the screw to secure the opposite end to the frame.
15
Reposition the inner access panel.
16
Replace the screw to secure.
17
Now insert the control panel tabs into the slots in the frame and push the panel down.
18
Replace the mounting screw to secure.
19
Insert the tabs on the grill into the slots in the frame and slide the grill to the right.
20
Rethread the mounting screws.
21
With the repair completed, plug the power cord back in and your microwave oven should be ready for use.
