Step 1: Make sure the engine has cooled.

Step 2: Perform this procedure with little or no fuel in the tank.

Step 3: Unthread the fuel tank cap and pull the retainer free of the tank if still intact.

Step 4: Detach it from the cap.

Step 5: Install the new fuel cap retainer by snapping it into place on the cap.

Step 6: Insert the retainer into the tank then rethread the cap.

Step 7: Refill the fuel tank if necessary.
