I remember the first time I attempted an appliance repair. The dryer had stopped drying clothes; we weren't in a financial position to buy a new replacement just then, and winter was not a good time to dry on a line in the yard. I knew that after the last time it broke, the repairman who got it fixed told me not to bother calling again. After five years, the machine was just too old to bother spending any more on repairs, he'd advised.
Tool box open, I desperately stared at the silent machine wondering where to start; worried that if I made a mistake, I might break it beyond repair...then realized the obvious predicament. It was already broken, beyond repair! After a quick search online, I found RepairClinic's troubleshooting guide with instructions on how to open the mysterious metal box, and what to look for inside.
That time, it was a gas solenoid that had failed; the felt seals were wearing, too, sometimes allowing the dryer to eat our underwear and chew on our socks. I ordered new solenoids and a tune-up kit from Repair Clinic which arrived in just a few days. In no time, the new parts were installed, and the "first" load of clothes dried!
With help from RepairClinic tutorials, I have over the years since, replaced almost every part in that dryer at least once (note that we bought it 20 years ago!); fixed my broken oven with an $18 sensor and 15 minutes of easy labor just in time to roast an Easter ham. I even fixed the neighbor's dryer (not everyone's comfortable using a screwdriver).
Life's been kind to me. Today I could easily buy a new dryer (or range, washer... whatever), But I won't - I've actually grown fond of that first one. Aside from my feeling of satisfaction when I can keep my household humming, counting the money saved by my DIY that we were able to spend on fun things, I realize the waste we would otherwise have generated had we disposed of our every broken-beyond-repair appliance. Thank you, RepairClinic, for making this so easy.
