Furnace is noisy or loud

Over time, the bearings in the blower motor or the draft inducer fan motor can wear out, causing the motor to become noisy. Some furnace motors can be lubricated—if your furnace motor can be lubricated, try lubricating it first. If lubricating the motor doesn’t solve the problem, or if your motor can’t be lubricated, replace the motor.

Air handler is noisy or loud

Over time, the bearings in the fan motor wear out, causing the motor to become noisy. Some furnace or air handler fan motors can be lubricated, so if applicable, try lubricating the motor first. If lubricating the motor doesn’t solve the problem, or if the fan motor can’t be lubricated, replace the motor.

To determine if the fan motor is working, use a multimeter to test the incoming voltage to the motor. If the fan motor is receiving the correct voltage but the motor still won’t run, inspect the capacitor to ensure that it is not at fault. If the capacitor is not bulging or leaking, replace the fan motor.

Since the fan motor is the component that circulates the air through unit to cool it, a defective motor could result in the coils frosting up. You can use a multimeter to test the fan motor for electrical continuity, a continuous electrical path present in the motor, as well as determine if power is reaching the motor. You can also try turning the fan blade by hand. If the blade does not turn freely, it's likely the motor bearings have seized and the motor will need to be replaced.

If the outdoor fan motor blades will not turn freely, or the windings are shorted, it will need to be replaced.
