Step By Step Instructions

1
Before you replace the flywheel key first make sure the engine has cooled.
2
Next, you should remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting.
3
Release the starter rope and handle from the rope guide.
4
Now remove the nuts securing the recoil starter to the engine
5
Pull the starter off and lift off the engine cover.
6
Now use a clamp to hold the brake bail arm down and rotate the flywheel to move the magnets away from the brake assembly.
7
Disconnect the wire from the ignition coil.
8
Remove the bolts securing the brake assembly and move the assembly out of the way.
9
Remove the spacer from the mounting post and remove the post and bolt to release the ignition coil.
10
Now use a strap wrench to secure the flywheel as you use a three-quarter inch socket to loosen the flywheel retaining nut.
11
This may require some effort.
12
Unthread the nut and lift off the flywheel cup.
13
Pull off the fan assembly.
14
Use a flywheel puller and rubber mallet to remove the flywheel.
15
If still intact, remove any pieces of the old flywheel key.
16
Install the new flywheel key by aligning it in the slot on the crankshaft then tap it lightly into place.
17
Align the slot in the flywheel with the new key and slide the flywheel onto the crankshaft.
18
Replace the fan assembly.
19
Realign the flywheel cup and replace the retaining nut to secure.
20
Using the strap wrench to secure the flywheel torque the nut to manufacturer’s specifications.
21
Reposition the ignition coil and rethread the mounting post and bolt to secure the coil loosely.
22
Confirm that the magnets are rotated out of the way, then pull the coil back and tighten the post and bolt.
23
Now, rotate the flywheel so the magnets align with the coil.
24
Insert a business card and loosen the post and bolt to align the coil the correct distance from the flywheel.
25
Re-tighten the post and bolt and remove the business card.
26
Slide the spacer onto the mounting post.
27
Reposition the brake assembly and replace the bolts to secure.
28
Reconnect the wire to the ignition coil and remove the clamp from the brake bail arm.
29
Replace the engine cover.
30
Reinstall the recoil starter by aligning it on the mounting posts then thread the nuts on to secure.
31
Hook the rope and handle onto the rope guide.
32
You’re now ready to reattach the wire and boot to the spark plug and confirm that the engine runs properly.
