DescriptionThis video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the transmission (or gearbox) on Cub Cadet snowblowers. The most common reasons for replacing the gearbox are when the auger won't turn or only one auger turns.
All of the information in this gearbox replacement video is applicable to the following brands: Cub Cadet
Tools used: 3/8” socket, 1/2” socket, wood block, needle-nose pliers, grease pump
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Before you replace the auger gear box in your snowblower first make sure the engine has cooled.
2
Next, remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting.
3
We recommend you perform this procedure with little or no fuel in the tank.
4
Use a 3/8th inch socket to remove the bolts securing the belt cover and pull the cover off.
5
Unhook the auger belt from the engine drive pulley.
6
Use the 3/8th inch socket to remove the bolt securing the front roller bracket and detach the bracket.
7
Detach the auger drive cable spring from the idler pulley bracket.
8
Now use a half-inch socket to help remove the bolts and washers that secure the auger housing to the rest of the snowblower.
9
With the bolts removed, lift off the auger housing and rest the rear portion of the snowblower on its handles.
10
Secure the impeller and you unthread the bolt securing the auger drive pulley.
11
Remove the washer and the pulley.
12
Remove the pulley hub as well.
13
Next, unthread the mounting bolts securing the bearing holders.
14
With the bolts removed, you can pull out the auger assembly.
15
Remove the impeller and slide off the bearing holders.
16
Now slide off both bearings as well as the outer washers, spacers and bushings.
17
Next, remove all of the retaining clips securing the shear pins then pull out all of the pins.
18
You can now remove all four auger blades plus the additional washers, spacers and bushings.
19
You’re now ready to prepare the new auger gear box for installation.
20
Slide the auger blades, spacers, washers and bushings onto the new gear box shaft in the same alignment as on the old gear box.
21
Now insert the shear pins and secure them with the retaining clips.
23
Slide on the bearing holders and the impeller.
24
You’re now ready to slide the assembly into the auger housing.
25
Insert the rear shaft into the auger bearing as you position the assembly.
26
Replace the bolts to secure the bearing holders.
27
Position the pulley hub on the shaft.
28
With the belt aligned on the auger pulley, position the pulley on the hub.
29
Slide on the washer onto the mounting bolt.
30
Secure the impeller as you thread the bolt and tighten.
31
Before continuing the reassembly, we recommend injecting grease into the bearing holders to help prevent wear.
32
The gear box itself already contains grease but if you need to add grease in the future, you can inject it into the fitting.
33
Now reposition the auger housing on the rear portion of the snowblower, making sure to align the chute on the chute adapter.
34
Rethread the housing bolts and tighten to secure.
35
Return the snowblower to its upright position.
36
Reattach the auger drive cable spring to the idler pulley bracket.
37
Now realign the front roller bracket on the frame and replace the bolt to secure.
38
Realign the auger belt on the engine drive pulley.
39
Replace the belt cover.
40
Rethread the bolts and tighten to secure.
41
With the repair completed reattach the spark plug wire and boot refill the fuel tank and your snowblower should be ready for use.
