Tools used: T-27 Torx bit, screwdriver
Step-By-Step Instructions1
Before you replace the rewind spring in your hedge trimmer…
2
…make sure the engine has cooled.
3
Next, you should remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting.
4
To reduce the chance of injury, we recommend keeping the blade cover on for this procedure.
5
Use a t-27 torx bit to unthread the screws to release the recoil starter and housing.
6
Secure the starter rope then untie the knot at the end…and remove the handle.
7
Hold the recoil starter pulley and slowly release the tension on the spring if still intact.
8
Use a phillips-head or a flat-head screwdriver to unthread the screw securing the pulley.
9
Gently remove the pulley and the coiled spring underneath.
10
Be aware the spring can cause injury so use eye protection and use a towel to help contain the spring.
11
You’re now ready to install the new rewind spring.
12
Align the hook in the spring with the slot in the starter housing…
13
…and hold the spring firmly in place as you remove the wire retainer.
15
Making sure the rope is secured in the notch…align the pulley and rotate it clockwise until the pulley sets into place…
16
…then rotate counter-clockwise until the spring catches onto the pulley tab.
17
Hold the pulley as you secure the screw.
18
Now rotate the pulley counter-clockwise approximately three-or-four times to put tension on the spring.
19
Align the notch in the pulley with the hole in the starter housing…
20
…and feed the rope through the housing.
21
Insert the end of the rope through the handle…
22
…and tie a knot to secure.
23
Make sure the knot is seated in the handle…and confirm that the recoil assembly rotates freely.
24
Realign the recoil starter housing on the lower housing…
25
…then thread and tighten the screws to secure.
26
The screws with the larger threads go in the bottom.
27
With the repair completed…
28
…reattach the wire and boot to the spark plug…
29
…and your hedge trimmer should be ready for use.
